LiFePO₄ Battery Buying Guide for India

When buying a LiFePO₄ battery in India, check five things: rated cycle life, whether a BMS is integrated, the usable depth of discharge, the warranty term and who honours it, and whether the cells are graded and matched before assembly. Rated amp-hours alone tells you very little.

Why two identical-looking batteries perform differently

Two packs can both say 25.6V 100Ah and behave nothing alike in service. The difference sits in cell grade, whether the cells were matched before assembly, the quality of the BMS, and how the pack was tested before it left the factory. None of that appears on the label.

The five specifications that matter

What to check, and what a good answer looks like
CheckWhat to askWhat good looks like
Cycle lifeHow many cycles, and at what depth of discharge?3,000+ cycles, with the depth of discharge stated
BMSIs it integrated, and what does it protect against?Over-charge, deep discharge, short circuit, over-current, over-temperature, cell imbalance
Usable capacityHow much of the rated capacity can I actually use?80% or more, stated plainly
WarrantyHow long, what does it cover, and who honours it?A multi-year term from the manufacturer, not just the dealer
Cell matchingAre cells graded and matched before assembly?Yes, with capacity and internal resistance checked
What to check, and what a good answer looks like

Cycle life is meaningless without depth of discharge

A cycle count only means something alongside the depth of discharge it was measured at. Six thousand cycles at 80% depth is a strong number. The same figure quoted at 20% depth describes a far weaker battery. If a supplier will not state the depth, treat the number as marketing.

The BMS is not optional

The Battery Management System is what stops a lithium pack destroying itself. It should monitor every cell, not just the pack as a whole, and disconnect before damage occurs.

  • Over-charge protection, cutting off before cell voltage goes too high
  • Deep discharge protection, disconnecting before cells are damaged
  • Short circuit protection
  • Over-current protection under excessive load
  • Over-temperature protection
  • Cell balancing, keeping cells within a tight band of each other

Warranty terms worth reading

Ask who actually honours the warranty. A dealer-backed warranty is only as durable as the dealer. Ask whether it is replacement or pro-rata, what voids it, and whether the manufacturer has a service presence you can reach directly.

Buying for Indian conditions

Ambient temperature is the factor most often overlooked. Equipment rooms, rooftops and telecom cabinets in much of India run hot for months at a time, and sustained heat shortens the life of any battery chemistry. Ask how the pack behaves at 45°C and above, not just at laboratory temperature.

  • High ambient temperature tolerance, since many installations are not climate controlled
  • Local manufacturing or stock, so replacement is not a long import wait
  • Service reach in your state, not only in the supplier’s home city
  • Compatibility with your existing inverter charging profile
  • Documentation in hand: datasheet, warranty and installation manual

Questions to ask any supplier

  1. What is the rated cycle life, and at what depth of discharge was it measured?
  2. Is the BMS integrated, and which protections does it implement?
  3. Are cells graded and matched before assembly?
  4. Is every pack tested under load before dispatch?
  5. What is the warranty term, and who honours it?
  6. Where is the pack manufactured, and where is the nearest service point?
  7. Can I see the datasheet and installation manual before ordering?

How Zeltron packs are specified

For transparency, and so the checklist above can be applied to us as readily as to anyone else: Zeltron packs are rated at 6,000+ cycles, ship with an integrated BMS covering all six protections listed above, are built from cells graded and matched before assembly, and are burn-in tested under load at our Greater Noida facility before dispatch. Datasheets, installation manuals and warranty documents are available on request.

Frequently asked questions

What should I look for when buying a LiFePO₄ battery?

Check the rated cycle life together with the depth of discharge it was measured at, confirm the BMS is integrated and covers all six standard protections, ask what proportion of the rated capacity is usable, read who honours the warranty, and ask whether cells are graded and matched before assembly.

How can I tell if a lithium battery is good quality?

Quality shows in the details a supplier will commit to in writing: cycle life stated with its depth of discharge, a full BMS protection list, evidence of cell matching, per-pack load testing, and a manufacturer-backed warranty. Reluctance on any of these is informative.

Are Indian-made lithium batteries as good as imported ones?

Cell quality and manufacturing discipline matter far more than the country on the label. The practical advantage of local manufacturing is service: replacement under warranty and technical support are considerably faster when the plant is in the same country.

What warranty is reasonable on a LiFePO₄ battery?

Multi-year cover is normal for the chemistry given its cycle life. What matters more than the number of years is who honours it, whether it is replacement or pro-rata, and what conditions void it.

Does temperature affect lithium battery life in India?

Yes. Sustained high ambient temperature shortens the life of every battery chemistry, and many Indian installations in equipment rooms, on rooftops or in telecom cabinets run hot for months. Ask specifically how a pack behaves above 45°C.
